Watching

All day it has been raining. The gutters and the downspouts echo and chime with a quiet musical resonance. The water has begun collecting in the streets, forming rivers full of fallen petals.

All day I have been watching closely. Listening carefully. Now I am standing on the dark porch as the streetlights turn on. Breathing in the night.

The familiar scent of the golden currant blooming beside the house. Bubble gum sweet. Mingling with the strong notes of damp earth and moonlight.

Waiting to see what the water has washed away. Waiting to see what it has carried here with it.
